Lactation Maven

Christine Curley, RN, BSN, IBCLC

ABOUT ME

Hello! I’m Christine. I’m a registered nurse and an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). I have been a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurse for 19 years and have spent the last 13 years working as both a Registered Nurse and an IBCLC in the NICU at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.  I have experienced first hand the trials and tribulations of breastfeeding compounded by having a baby in the NICU setting. I have worked with mothers and babies that have struggled with all aspects of lactation that continue even after discharge from the hospital. Very often, mothers are being discharged home from the hospital with their babies before breastfeeding has been established, which can leave mothers confused and lacking the confidence they need to proceed on their journey with breastfeeding. I provide breastfeeding support for all of your lactation concerns and can help to bridge the gap from the hospital to the home environment, to help you achieve your optimal breastfeeding goals.

Services

Home Visits

Lactation Maven offers comprehensive lactation support for all of your breastfeeding needs. All visits take place in the convenience of your own home. Most initial home visits last 1.5- 2 hours.

Pre-Natal Lactation Education

Lactation Maven offers pre-natal breastfeeding consults, in your home, before your baby is born to help prepare you for breastfeeding your newborn. A broad overview of what to expect during the first few days after your baby is born through the first few weeks of life is reviewed. For mothers who are at high risk for delivering their babies pre-mature, more in-depth breastfeeding and NICU education can be provided.

Breast and Nipple Health

Good breast and nipple health is essential to breastfeeding. Any pain to the nipples or breast can indicate a lactation problem and may impact breastfeeding. Lactation Maven can assist with identifying and treating breast and nipple issues such as mastitis, blocked milk ducts, yeast, cracked nipples, blebs and more.

Telephone Lactation Consult

Not sure if you need a lactation consult? Do you have just a few questions you'd like to ask? Lactation Maven offers telephone support to answer your questions and concerns. Telephone consults are by the half hour.

Pre-Term and Late Pre-Term Breastfeeding Support

Breastfeeding a pre-term infant has its own sets of challenges. Since exclusive breastfeeding usually has not been fully established before the infant is discharged from the hospital, it can be difficult and confusing to know how to proceed on your breastfeeding journey once you are out of the NICU environment. Lactation Maven has the expertise to help guide you and your baby safely on this journey.

Pumping and Milk Supply Support

Whether you are concerned that you are not producing enough milk for your baby, struggling with an over supply of milk , or having issues related to pumping your milk, Lactation Maven has the experience to help you find the right solution for your situation.

Latching and Breastfeeding Support

A baby's latch is one of the most important aspects of breastfeeding and can determine how successful breastfeeding will be. Lactation Maven has the expertise to assist with latching and breastfeeding issues such as a shallow latch, the inability to maintain a latch at the breast, falling asleep at the breast, or just refusing to latch onto the breast at all.
